"Then I'm going to make my parents feel like absolute shit, and I'm going to make them buy me something."

-- Julia, when asked what she was going to do if her parents forgot to pick her up from the bus, on the ski trip I chaperoned with my boyfriend a few weeks ago

New Year's Day

5 18 pm pst   [ and a new era begins ]

And we are swimming in a sea of 2000. And we are all human and alive and once again doing our best to get by. We are naked.

The small floor heater has a safety feature. It shuts off automatically after an hour to prevent fire. When it shut off today, the house was deathly silent. All four of us were reading. Matthew and I were on the couch, my mother was in the kitchen, and my brother was in the dining room. My ears rang with the sound of my mother turning a page.

Matthew is absolutely addicted to Cryptonomicon, which I gave him to read several weeks ago. He won't stop until he has finished. I read the book back in May 1999.
