11 17 pm pst [ broken ]
My laptop ceased functioning while I was using it today. I noticed in the middle of typing that is said the battery was half dead. I figured the power cord had come loose, but no amount of jiggling would get it to work again. I called information for Apple's number in Cupertino. The recorded voice that greeted me at Apple, instructed me to call an 800 number for support. That number instructed me to call a second 800 number for iMac, G3, G4, and PowerBook support. Finally, a person gave me a case number and the location of two local servicing places. I am still under warranty.
I called one of the servicing places and they said I needed a proof of purchase. I bought my laptop right before I went on my cross country drive, so I have not a clue where the receipt is. I called the company whom I bought it from and asked them to send me a copy of my receipt.
"What's your fax number?"
"I don't have a fax number. Can you please just mail it to me?"
"I'm in sales. I can't do that." He transferred me to support.
I couldn't be upset, because I ended up talking to John in the support department forever. He told me about his car, his troubles finding women, his failed attempt at going to college for an engineering degree, and that fact that he considers 30 degrees to be warm. [He is in Connecticut.] I made him jealous with stories of the glorious California sunshine. I love when people share bits of their lives...
