11 42 pm est   [ spring ]

Last night was my grandfather's big birthday bash. He had a wonderful time, which was of the utmost importance. Twenty-two family members gathered to celebrate an 85th birthday. Most of the members were of older generations, though we did have a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 19-month-old in attendance. The next youngest was my brother and then me. Most of the party-goes referred to my grandfather as uncle. I brought four foot printed copies of the family tree (my grandfather's mother's and father's branches). I got the older attendees to help me fill them out. My reputation proceeded me. I was called at various times to report when uncle Norman died and what the difference is between first cousins once removed and second cousins. I have the latter memorized from explaining it so often.

I wore a stunning dress my father got me on our last trip to Hawai'i. It is a light maroon with large yellow flowers. I was the only one not dressed in black or navy blue. The tulip centerpieces matched the vibrance of my dress. We took one home, and it seems so appropriate, as tomorrow is the first day of spring.

I think some of the elderly family member resent the fact that I have declared myself family historian at such a young age, but there is not much they can do about it. It was nice to meet the family members whom I didn't know. My favorite was Andy, who is some distant cousin with a fantastic story of dreaming of his unborn son's name. He was also very interested in the family tree, which gives him a big plus in my book. I hope to talk with him again soon...

[ flowers ]

I hope the flowers last a few days so I can fully enjoy their beauty...
