6 34 pm pst [ the big head ]
"What's the big head?"
We were walking back from lunch. I looked at Tim
expectantly, but he didn't answer.
The street is highly overgrown on this walk, so we end up walking single
file and tunring as much as possible to face the person behind when
talking. I thought he was ignoring me. I tried to be patient, but I'm
not very good at that.
"What's the big head?"
I could always say I thought he hadn't heard me.
When I asked the third time he held his finger to his
lips. We walked just a little further and then he pointed.
It was nestled beneath the Hollywood sign -- a huge head in profile
sitting on a house.
It was one of the odder things I had ever seen.
I wondered out loud why anyone would put such a thing
on their house. We went back to the office.
...And today, having brought lunch with me, I decided
to take a walk during lunch and get some pictures of the big head.
Matthew had leant me his digital camera. I was excited to experiment with
it. I tried to notice my surroundings moreso than normal. Had I known
before that the Melrose teatre was across the street? It appears to
currently be occupied by HBO. Further exploration is certainly called for.
I adore plants, but I've
always thought palm trees are a bit unhappy looking. They can't boast
lush foilage. I remember being in elementary school, driving back from
big bear, and saying that palm trees look naked. I meant that as a
negative. Then I made up some myth aout why they look the way they do.
I wish I could remember what it was. I also made up myths about where
rain comes from, and other natural phenomena. I was quite the story
teller back then.
The neighborhood where I work is loaded with companies feeding and fed by
the film industry. There are casting houses, equipment suppliers,
software engineers, and next door is a place that does voice overs.
I never set out to be in the film industry. Even when
I was a film major in college
I had no real intention of trying to be a mainstream film maker. I just
thought it would be lovely to study movies for four years.
It has been much too chilly lately for my tastes, but I feel that my
normal walk to the grocery store is a bit of regular exercise that my body
is greatful for. I wish I wasn't such a bum and that I did more physical
activity, but I have been very good about walking to get groceries at both
work and home.
The strangest part about today's walk was the trees.
They were all in a row, cut off at identical angles.
They loked so foreign. My mind announced that trees should look like
that. I recognized them as unnatural before I even registered what they
were.
The lovliest part of my walk was the wood. There is a large knarled knot
of wood which somebody has placed in their front yard and which I have
always admired in passing. I look forward to the time when I will have my
own garden to fill with strange and wonderous objects.
Finally I came to the street. I walked up for a closer view. I didn't
care if people thought it was odd that I wanted to take pictures of this
architectural anomoly.
It was as though I was in another world. I forgot
about work and food; I enveloped myself in angle and purpose.
It was even stranger and funnier up close. Why would anyone put such a
thing on their house? No doubt for me to admire and fill my diary with
wonderful pictures of. Do you think so? I couldn't resist addidng a
little color to his lips in the picture at the top of this page...
