5 39 pm pst   [ moving walls ]

Matthew and I always want to do more than we can manage when we are together. Saturday night was my seventh Groaning Mona concert, which I attended with Matthew and his sister Kim. Sunday night Matthew and I had dinner with Charles at the Hump. Tonight we are having sushi again, this time with Alexandra.

It's about time I got around to explaining the Groaning Mona experience. The promotional mailing I received from their mailing list promised the show would be in 3-D and Dante Velveeta announced at the beginning of the show that the walls would move. They did and the show was wonderful! But I'm getting ahead of myself...

Dante Velveeta is the cheesiest! He's a bit older than the typical rock band member, and his most distinguishing characteristic is that he doesn't play any instrument. He's an announcer, and when no one is looking he sneaks in whatever fragments of a song he can before Ice Dog starts throwing something at him. Dante makes me laugh every time. He dances while the band plays and he always spruces up his polyester suit with some funky hat or other accessory.

I can't say I enjoy Ice Dog; you're not supposed to. He's a ragged bundle of male rage. His parts in the script involve him yelling at and insulting various band members. I think he likes it that way.

The string section functions as unit -- not quite cohesive, but all the better for it. Selva has an amazing set of lungs on her and looks delicious in her red dress. She seems happy doing her own thing. Casanova adds his Brazilian flair, and the two seem to blend musically. They both seem to love performing. Mojo blends, except when confronted by his mail order bride Jojo. She is so beautiful when she takes her wig off.

I shouldn't even mention Amaebi. What could I say that he wouldn't scrutinize and analyze? We met because he though he saw me in a bank.

We have since spent a good deal of time together, but on stage he is a different creature entirely. If you watch a Groaning Mona show you may get the feeling of witnessing a group therapy session. Amaebi acts out his complexes on stage. He almost always shows some chest and has played in drag twice. His arrest was spoofed as well as his former relationship. His energy level skyrockets and he is transformed. He also has an unexpectedly magnificent singing voice.

Angel is captivating. She manages to make drumming look like the most simple activity on the planet. She performs flawlessly, but always with a perfect smile and pristine poise. I like to watch her pre-teen daughter watch her perform. Angel is radiant.

If you're in LA, send me an e-mail and maybe we can go to the next show together...

2 years ago today: I didn't write because I was trying to get through all my school work before Thanksgiving break.

1 year ago today: So I got hacked... twice. Well, sort of.
