3 years ago: The crows were out in numbers; their black coats looked blue as they reflected the sky.

2 years ago: I didn't write until the new year because I was in Hawai'i.

1 year ago: The occasion for writing this letter -- now that the form is defined -- is the New Year's transition from 1999 to 2000.
