11 32 pm pst [ my first AA meeting ]
We were discussing dinner plans when she said her AA
meeting was at 8. "Can I go with you to your meeting?" I asked after a
moment's thought.
"Sure," she lit up. "I was going to ask you if you
wanted to go but I thought it was a little weird."
I've know her for a long time now and I didn't know
until tonight that she has recently started attending AA meetings. She
has more of a problem with drugs than alcohol, but the support is much the
same at Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
My perception of AA was entirely informed by its
portrayal in films and television shows. I went into the meeting with
What Planet Are you From? and Fight
Club lurking heavily in my memory.
My first impression was of how many more men there were
than women. Other than that, the group was quite diverse -- people from
all walks of life united by the desire to end their addictions. I'd heard
of the 12 steps but had no idea the program had a
spirituality component and I'd never heard of the Big Book. The
experience was eye opening.
Matthew once attended an NA meeting with a friend of
his. He told me he was grateful he got to experience it, especially as a
guest instead of a participant. I feel exactly the same way.
