_________________ Saturday 3 February 2001 9 10 pm pst [ a special dispensation ] I was looking at my grandparents' marriage certificate for the hundredth time when I noticed a line I hadn't seen before: Was a Special Dispensation Issued? Yes What is a special dispensation? Everything2 defines special dispensation as: "When somebody in power says it's OK for some people to do something that's not OK." Next on my search of discovery, I found a Catholic Encyclopedia, which defined dispensation at length using words such as abrogation, derogation, and epikeia. I got the general gist. If one of the parties was of a different religion, too young, etc., a special dispensation needed to be granted to allow the marriage. I have no idea why my grandparents would have needed one. Now I have to call my mom and see if she knows why...
