11 24 pm pdt [ new life ]
Matthew and his roommates have let their huge backyard
lay fallow for the two and a half years they have rented this house. Two
days ago, their neglect paid off, when a doe decided the spot was ripe for
her to brith her twin foals. The other roommates witnessed the birth.
Today I watched one wobbly baby make his [or her] way
around the back yard. I named him Dollop (though roommate Steve calls him
Guiseppe 3) and I named the one I didn't see Trotter (though I have also
considered naming him/her Doppler, and Steve named him/her Guiseppe 4).
Matthew shot some baby steps and made a
[600k] web version for your
amusement.
I sat on a stair only a few feet from Dollop and he
lifted his heavy head to stare at me with cloudy eyes. I talked to him a
bit and wondered why his mother hadn't come to shoo me away. New life if
such an amazing phenomenon. On and on the cycle goes...
Matthew interrupted my Dollop-gazing to fetch me for
errands. We made our last grocery store visit before our trip to Europe,
and we stopped at a bookstore so I could get a journal for this trip. The
excitement is mounting in me.
