On the (second to last) Friday before their trip,
Matthew flew back to Berkeley from his business trip to Vegas.
On the Saturday before their trip, Rachel flew back to
Berkeley from Los Angeles, and they participated in The 2nd Annual
Ultimate LEGO Vehicle Contest.
On the Sunday before their trip, they ran errands and
got this journal.
On the Monday before their trip, Matthew spent his
first Monday working from home.
On the Tuesday before their trip, Matthew stayed home
sick because he caught the cold Rachel got in Las Vegas.
On the Wednesday before their trip, Matthew got home
late and Rachel was out procuring Chevys chips and salsa and enjoying
"Free Scoop Night."
[page 4:]
On the Thursday before their trip, they made a last
trip to the grocery store.
On the Friday before their trip, Matthew asked Rachel
to make a checklist, and he drovve to Gilroy on his lunch break to buy
jeans.
On Saturday, 05 May 2001, they packed. The shuttle
came early and Matthew scrambled to throw the rest of his stuff together
while Rachel packed up some snacks for the plane.
In the shuttle, Rachel first questioned the driver and
then later the two other passengers. One wan was going on a business trip
for his company, which makes wide area networks. The other was a lovely
man named ________ who is the program manager of Interactive Educational
Technologies at ________.
* notes: shuttle = $32

At the airport, Matthew and Rachel quickly checked
their luggage and then set about to wait. Rachel washed carrots for
Matthew and ate some of the bread she had brought. She gave Matthew a
play-by-play of a little boy getting scolded for eating off the ground,
until she realized Matthew was totally transfixed by something else.
"BootMan" immediately became the subject of a song Rachel made up to
capture his lengthy and intense study of his boot, which he removed from
his foot for said purpose.
Boarding was more than a half hour late, but Rachel and
Matthew were satisfied to people-watch.
During the flight, they watched "The Wedding Planner"
and "The Family Man." Rachel had two screwdrivers and Matthew had four.
They sat across the ailse from each other and they shared lots of giggles
and hand signals back and forth. Matthew had no room for his knees but
both managed to get some sleep.
* notes: car magazine = $4.25; bottled water = $4.05

[page 7:]
The plane's landing was bumpy, and Rachel felt mounting
waves of nausea assault her. She tried to make it out of the plane, but
knowing she was about to faint, she sat down with her head between her
knees. She eventually made it off the plane, and felt better after eating
a little bit of bread.
Their layover was 4 hours. Their only plan during that
time was to locate the Formula One store Matthew had seen previously.
They asked several people, who all said it didn't exist, and it wasn't
listed on the kiosk. But they persisted and finally located it in the D
terminal.
* notes: bottled water = ~$5.00; drink at bar = $5.25; sandwich
= ~$4.00
