Today was conference day at school, so instead of
working from 2:30-6:30, I was scheduled to work from 9-2. eM called and
said she would be late because of a doctors appointment, so I actually
worked 9-4.

I give myself extra time to drive to work in case I
should stall the car and flood the engine, or encounter some other
vehicular malady. Driving stick still petrifies me and I get frustrated
because I can make the car move as smoothly as I would like it to.

|
I also woke up with a runny nose, which I felt coming
on last night. Matthew had surprised me at work last night, so I left my
car at work and he drove me home and then drove me back this morning. We
were a bit rushed for time, but I managed to pack a huge lunch, and
traffic was non-existant, so I got there early.

You know the expression feed a cold; starve a
fever? Well, I more operate on the feed a cold; feed a fever; feed
the flu; feed a runny nose; feed a healthy Rachel philosophy. At work
I discovered that they were providing us with lunch, so I ate twice, and
then went back for seconds.

Work was mellow. I went out in the sunshine with the
kids. I kept tissues in my pocket and tried not to run around too much.
I read to some of the little kids. It was lovely.

Yesterday, two of the kids had gotten in trouble. One
left early, but Brian had been giving a 15-minute "time out" by Dee before
she left. At first he though it was a game. He tried to mouth to the
other kids. I made him face away from them. Then he got floppy on the
bench and stated draping himself over it. I made him sit on his butt.
Finally, he realized he wasn't going to have any fun. He started crying,
and when he stopped I let him get up after ten minutes. He was fuming mad
for the rest of the evening.

|
But today he had no grudge for me. He wanted to play
the game he and his friend had taught me (formerly called Jewel Swords,
they said they had moved on to Silver Swords and then to Masks). He even
asked me to have lunch with him on some mountain, which turned out to be
the play structure. So we ate together on a high platform and watched as
other kids began milling over to swing and slide.
