our 4.5 year anniversary

9 11 pm pdt   [ cuddles ]

"Happy half anniversary, Potato."

"Happy half anniversary, Lover Shmover"

"I love you."

"I love you too!"

[snuggling for a minute]

"You really don't want to go to work, do you."

10 11 pm pdt   [ how it happened ]

This is how it went down.

Matthew called me at about 5 35. "Can you take off work tomorrow?"

I was immediately flustered. "I can try, but the answer is probably 'No.'"

He needed to know before 6. I said I'd call my boss and ask. I gathered up the kids and we returned to the auditorium. I called Matthew to ask if it would be possible for me to leave early instead of not working at all. He said 1 by the latest. Maybe I can make this work, whatever it is.

I called my boss. She wasn't home. Bummer. This isn't going to work. I let Matthew know. I say I'll try asking my supervisor. Maybe I can make this work.

My supervisor doesn't know the schedule. This isn't going to work. I let Matthew know.

Then my boss calls. She thinks I should be able to leave by 2 30. That's something. Maybe earlier! Maybe I can make this work. I let Matthew know.

I look at the clock. It's 5 55. Did he have time to talk to the person he needed to talk to before 6? Maybe this isn't going to work. I feel bad that I am coming across as an irresponsible employee, but I don't want to criticise Matthew because he's clearly planned some wonderful anniversary surprise!

Matthew doesn't call back. I think things must have worked. I go home. When I get home, my phone says I have voice mail. It's a message from Matthew saying that by the time he called, all of the reservations were filled up, so now it won't work. Well, he's taking off of work on Friday and now I'm leaving early, so surely we'll find some way to celebrate. I call him and ask if there is some way we can do some sort of alternative, but he says no.

At home he sulks and apologizes. We decided to take a nice long walk to Rockridge to have a simple anniversary dinner. He decides to "check their website." I get ready. He looks mighty satisfied. He made the resrvations online. Everything will work out.

We take our long walk. We have Japanese at Uzen. I am so excited about tomorrow's adventure...
