_________________ 7 12 pm pdt [ home ] Matthew is desperate to come home early from Alabama, so is on his way here right now. I've spent a good part fo the day cleaning in anticipation of his arrival. We are having such a good time living together. I am continually fascinated with the social phenomenon that is Friendster. I am completely intruiged with the way people construct their identity in relation to the internet. If I were going to get a Ph.D. (as I still fantasize about) that would be a focus I would seriously consider. On Friendster I just found someone I went to high school with and someone I slept with. The latter is not friendsters with the person through whom I met him (his best friend at the time), nor with his ex-girlfriend who he was fixated on while I knew him and who he got back together with after our encounter. Fascinating! But what I find most interesting is that a social network such as this (which may change shortly and lose its appeal with the coming of subscription services) prevents people from loosing touch. The way in which we leave people behind will be altered if these connections grow as the company hopes they will. I can find out what people from my high school or elementary school are up to just by searching for their names, instead of just thinking them lost to the winds of fate.
