Matthew and I were pontificating on what percentage of
Americans had never been on the internet. I said 25% and he went off on
how it had to be less than that. So I tried to find out. I mostly came
up with outdated statistics, but they are fascinating:
From 1999:
- Only 43% of U.S. households were online in 1999
- 66% of Americans age 18-29 had internet access
- just 13% of the over-65 population was wired
source
From August 2000:
- Only 12.7% of households with incomes of $15,000 or less
were accessing the Internet, compared with 77.7% of households with
incomes of $75,000 or more.
- People with disabilities are only half as likely to access the
Internet as those without disabilities.
- 56.8% of Asian American households were online
46.1% of white households were online
23.5% of black households were online
23.6% of Hispanic households were online
source
From 2003:
- 30% of Americans have never used the Internet, and 44% use it
frequently
- 18% of Americans under the age of 35 have never been online
- over 55% of Americans 65 years of age and over have never been
online
source
Other stats:
- 88% of adult Russians have never used the Internet
source
and commentary
- October 2001 in the UK: 60% of women and 59% of men have never used
the Internet; only 22% of those in poorly skilled social groups have been
surfing compared with 68% of the professional classes.

- April 2003: 38% of adults in Great Britain have never accessed the Internet
source
- 40% of UK adults have never used the Internet
source
- In 2000, 42% of Canadian adults had never used the Internet.
source
- The number of people who have never used a computer in Estonia was
54% (±2.5%) of the inhabitants aged 15-74 in the fourth quarter of 2001.
Non-users of the Internet form 63% (±2.5%).
source
- In 2001, 90% of the world's population had never been on the
Internet.
