I am having a rolicking good time with my
brother at Yale. Last night was an 80's themed party called the
safety dance. I sported a side ponytail, tourquoise tank top with
bra staps showing, and heavy lipstick (wish I had blue eye shadow).
It was a ton of fun. Leave it to me to find four Harvard seniors as
dance partners. I spent a good portion of the evening with my bro,
and also danced a spell with Joe from West Point (who said it was the best
part he had ever been to!) and my brother's suite mate Chris. I had
moments where I was terrified to realize that I was the oldest person
there, but even more frightening was the thought that if I visit my sister when she is a freshman in college, I
will be 26! I also was amused to see how these kids interpreted the
80's, since they would have been 10 at most when the decade ended.
It is interesting that I think of the 80's much differently than these
students, and the same is true for those four years older than me...
It was fascinating to see what 80's songs the students cherished, and
which they didn't know. The finale was We Are the World.
Quite to my surprise, 500 youngsters got arm in arm and began
swaying to the music and they sung and clung to each other. It was
magical.
