Our daughter is 52 days old today, or seven and a half weeks, or one and three quarters months.

We believe her to be about 11 pounds and 23 inches.

She still doesn't smile very often (only once or twice a day), but when she does, it's the best thing in the world.

She only spits up about once a week. We are very pleased about this.

She has outgrown her newborn diapers and is on to the small size.

She still often cries during diaper changes. Daddy is better at the non-crying changes.

She seems to be okay with a bath for a while, but eventually cries. We think she'll grow to love it.

She enjoys her swing and will intently stare at the patterns we've printed and taped on the wall nearby.

She still doesn't sleep through the night, but we are hopeful that she will master this talent soon.

We are working on infant potty training with her. At this stage, that mostly involves us identifying what cues indicate that she's pottying.

She loves music, including the rap mommy has introduced her to. We play classical for her a lot, especially in the car.

Our favorite outfit for her is a little suit mommy used to wear in the 70's. We call it her German outfit (long story).

Her medical problems to date include jaundice, cradle cap (a type of dandruff), an eye infection, and some inflamed fingertips from ingrown nails. We have her hands uncovered at all times now, and though she rarely scratches her face, she is very good at gouging our necks, grabbing daddy's glasses, and pulling mommy's hair. We have not mastered cutting her nails.

She can stand up all by herself for about three seconds. Mommy and daddy love practicing this trick.

She still doesn't like the flash from the camera. Mommy is hoping to start shooting home movies soon.

Daddy started back to work full time last week. Mommy started her afternoon nanny job again last week. We are still adjusting to our new family.

Mommy's favorite things that she does are the way she puts her head way back when you pick her up to burp her, the little frowny face she makes when she is sad (that we call her "small mouth"), the concentrated look on her face when she stares at the black and white patterns on the wall, her smile, the way she stretches out her whole body, and (mommy's favorite:) when she laughs in her sleep!

She makes an incredible amount of noise, between her grunting, wheezing, panting, crying, slurping, gulping, snoring, coughing, sneezing, and making random vocalizations. She still doesn't really coo or squeal with delight.

For the past week she has been very irritable and hungry all the time, which mommy attributes to a growth spurt. She likes to stick out her tongue a lot and salivates excessively. We are hoping this phase ends soon.

She will be going to the doctor for her 2 month check-up on the 18th.

At daddy's suggestion, we are keeping a diaper count.

Love, Rachel, Matthew & Baby
