It has become necessary to create a page for Catherine if only to offer myself a place to link to that will not be moved within a week. I first encountered Catherine Jamieson on a community mailing list where I was drawn to her strong opinions but had only the briefest sense of her. I can remember little of how our friendship evolved into rapid fire e-mails and hours spent on the phone. Her journal at the time was the irresistable Naked Eye, which always remained one of the few journals I managed to poke at regularly. She began a weblog for writers and readers of online diaries, sending new readers my way whenever she linked to me. We wrote Tea Kettle stories (spontaneous collaborative entiries) about being afraid. She started a new mailing list and we both worked to make it a community. We planned projects and business ventures and adventures, both fragile and grandeous [here I find I am speaking of both us and our plans]. Months dripped by in the ways they are wont to do. Catherine ended Naked Eye and began Modern Anthology. She ended Modern Anthology and began Graffiti. Graffiti ended and became Living Art Online. I have somehow butchered the chronology, missing Flux Redux and Ephemera and iThink and Clotheslines, but you get the gist that a lot of change occurred in a fairly short amount of time. I moved several times. Her legal battle got worse. She used the word foreclosure. I shuddered. Then in May 2001 her site appeared to be closed for good. In a moment of panic I was sure I had lost her, that she had ceased all internet communications as she had planned and that she had moved with no mention of forwarding address or new phone number. But we have not lost each other; we have simply morphed our lives into new shapes. We will never cease to do so. |
