It was to my total surprise on 2 November 1997 to discover that there is a rather extensive online journalling community.

At first I resisted the idea of becomming a part of this community for a while, and only joined a few rings (linked collections of sites). I have such an aversion to being trendy. But I couldn't stay away forever. I next learned that there were 'burbs (lists of like journals and diaries). So I joined a few of those. Then (on 10 July 1999) I offered to maintain the 'burbs listing at Open Pages. Next I joined some mailing lists. Finally I founded a ring that was of interest to me (overexposed) and a 'burb (onymous) that I felt belonged in the community. I also volunteered to run two other rings (on display and bared).

My next project was to try to organize a "Readers' Choice" awards site as a companion to The Diarist Awards but there wasn't enough support. So here is the rundown on where you can find me in the community...

I some point near the beginning of 2000 I postponed my subscriptions to most mailing lists, brought on by my feeling that diary-l is often too mean-spirited, and I didn't feel like immersing myself in that kind of environment.

In early 2001 I let all but my favorite ring memberships go. In summer of 2001 I began rejoining non-ring collabs is a search for new inspiration.

interviews:

  • I was interviewed for a segment of SPY TV about online diaries on 20 September 1999, which was my diary's second birthday.
  • I did an interview for About.com in December 1999.
  • I was interviewed for a Bella-Online article on self-promotion.
  • I was interviewed for an article about online diaries for SELF magazine (the initial request came on 2 September 1998). I never received notification that it was published, so I don't know what became of that.
