On Thursday, 21 December 2000 I was admitted to the Colours collab. Every two months, two color topics are presented -- one "traditional" and one "interpretive". Because I felt inspired, I elected to do all the topics from before I joined.

periwinkle project completed: 31 October 2001 My favorite Crayola colors when I was little were periwinkle, sky blue, and sea green. But that lovely shade didn't inspire much when it came to this project, so I turned to the dictionary. I first read Any of several small, often edible marine snails, ... having thick, cone-shaped, whorled shells and then I read Any of several shrubby, trailing, evergreen plants .. having glossy, dark green, opposite leaves. The idea of making a snail flower got distilled into making a spiral flower. The background I created gives it an awful wallpaper look.

swirl project completed: 26 June 2001 I began with a photograph of the seeds of the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis). After using a twirl filter to give it its spiral, I overlaid it with a photograph I took on 24June 2001 of the swirl of his hair on top of my boyfriend's head.

I wanted to show the importance of purple by showing its absence, and I thought no venue would be better than a rainbow. I signed up for a free three-day trial of ArtToday and downloaded a photograph of a rainbow. In desaturating [removing the color from] the purple band of the rainbow, I realized how similar grey is to purple and how the blue sky made the grey look yellowish. Unsatisfied, I downloaded I line art image of a rainbow. Again, the grey looked like a sickly purple. I tried black -- the absence of color -- and then decided the photograph better captured what I was trying to do.

sex photograph taken: Saturday, 31 March 2001 I wanted to explore the sex organ of a flower without drawing parallels to human reproduction, so I went for a subtle look with the snail alluding to "the birds and the bees" -- sex as a cyclical process of nature.

twilight Twilight is a time of cool subtle colors -- an idea which I thwarted with my bright firey twilight sky. The original image was of wood grain. The colors were sharply contrasted and then further banded with partially transparent layers on top.

treadmill The idea of "treadmill" as exercise equipment didn't inspire me, so I chose a play on words and combined tire tread with a pepper mill. I took the photo of the tire tread in the Bay Area after a heavy rain and was pleased with the sprinkling of yellow leaves on the rubber. I was displeased with the first pepper mill I came across and waited to capture my mother's at home in her kitchen.
