According to Vegan Actions' general information page:
I have been vegetarian over a decade and vegan for about a year less than that. I first became vegetarian when I was more heavily involved in the animal rights movement. I have since become less militant and I have given up my fantasies of being arrested freeing lab animals. But I am still vegan! What started out as a change for environmental and animal rights reasons has now turned into a lifestyle habit for health purposes. I don't mind if people eat meat in front of me; I only mind when they tease or challenge me about being vegetarian/vegan. I respect everyone's right to eat whatever makes them happy, and hope they will do the same for me. When I was around twelve, I asked my father if I could be vegetarian. He said no. It took me a year to realize that I didn't have to listen to him. So when I was thirteen, I simply said, "I am a vegatarian." About a year after that I went vegan, which was not at all as hard as I though. I mainly miss out on breakfasts (pancakes, French toast, and waffles are not vegan, so I have a lot of home fries and hash browns) and desserts (but I didn't eat most desserts to begin with).
